Today at Tech reads, we will look at one important part of many devices we use! Of course you are reading this on a Computer and it is the the semiconductors which ultimately make this possible! We are not going much into real technical details but just the basics!
Definition
There are many substances and you can classify them into two types, Good conductors, which allow flow of electrons better then some others and there are Bad conductors which, as the name suggests, don't allow flow of electrons like other substances! So these semiconductors are substances which are in between these two types of substances. That is, they show properties of both! This is that one thing that makes it possible The development of these types of substances has made it possible to develop better micro processors and memory storage!
Interesting properties
Another way a semiconductor is different from a metal is that the electrical conductivity of it increases with increasing temperature. It has some properties such as passing current more easily in one direction than other, showing variable resistance! Of course there are many other properties too. They have a property of using them as a variable switch.
Life with out it!
Life without semiconductors would be much different rather much difficult. Behind the immense advancement of technology, these have played a great role. Transistor radios wouldn't be portable and calculator prices dropped from the price of Actual computers to what they are now because of semiconductors! Desktop computers, Tablets and a wide range of electronics use Semiconductors!
Making, history and examples.
They have been tested for over hundred years and they became more prominent as the need for Computers progressed. They are made using several processes such as Doping(adding of impurities to make them conduct). Semiconductors are found in two types- elemental and compounds. Although some pure elements and many compounds exhibit semiconductor properties, Silicon, Germanium and compounds of Gallium are most widely used in electronic devices!
